About this tour

Catania half-day tour with a visit to the historic center and an aperitif at the market.

Our suggestions: Piazza Duomo – Cathedral of Sant’Agata – Bellini – Pallazzo Ittar – via dei Crociferi – piazza Dante – Monastery of the Bededittini – piazza Università – Public Gardens – Elephant Fountain – via Etnea – Porta Uzeda – Ursino Castle

Catania is the daughter of the volcano; the people of Catania, always mourning the lava flows, turn to Sant’Agata , their beloved protector and savior, to whom eight churches and the Cathedral are dedicated. “Do not offend the homeland of Saint Agatha, for she is the avenger of misdeeds.” The people of Catania, volcanic like their mountains, ironic, rebellious, subtle, full of imagination and resourcefulness.

After the earthquake of 1693 which completely destroyed the city, the Spanish crown exempted the curia from paying donations, as long as the sums were invested in the rebuilding of new religious buildings. Magnificent churches and prestigious convents were thus built which tended to “create an island”, occupying entire blocks. Disasters are capable of damaging, but not erasing, ancient civilizations, still thriving today, made of lava, destroyed and resurrected again.
